Broodmare Power

The power behind any breeding program is the broodmare band. No matter how talented the stallion, good broodmares are a vital key to the equation. As a result of this opinion & a bit of luck, we have a small [but what I consider] quality herd of mares.

All of these mares have a few things in common. For one, they're put together well. With few exceptions, they also have performance or race records themselves &/or are by or out of horses that do. They're gifted with good minds &,- perhaps the most important trait for a broodmare,- they produce.

These mares are an integral part of any success that our breeding program has,-or will have,- experienced.

Please take a moment to meet our grand old dams. If truth be known, the broodmare band is occasionally known as the twisted sisters... it just depends on what kind of day it's been! [At the bottom of this page, you'll find pedigree chart links for all mares listed.] If you have any inquiries about their bloodlines, any of their foals, etc. please feel free to drop a line!

Golden Yobo

1984 AQHA/PHBA/FQHA palomino mare

Golden Yobo is a 15.1 HH, 1984 AQHA/PHBA/FQHA palomino mare by Richest Hobo [Jo's Hobo - Natchees Bee, AQHA Champion X Mayday Leola - Leo Minnick, SI-75, race money earner] out of Codys Hy Caprice [Three Jets Cody, AQHA Champion - Three Jets, SI-100 X Miss Hyjo - Fancy Joe Boy, AQHA Champion]. Registered with FQHA, Yobo is calculated as 92.1875% foundation. Linebred to Bee Play [by Band Play] 4X4, she has an "old timey" pedigree. As a matter of fact, Yobo claims multiple lines to many of the old great horses. For an example, she has 11 crosses to Old Sorrel & 14 crosses to Peter Mc Cue.

With AQHA & PHBA halter points, Yobo has over 200 open & amateur PHBA performance points with several ROMs. She was the 1995 PHBA Honor Roll Champion in amateur barrels [tie] & 1995 PHBA Reserve Honor Roll Champion in amateur pole bending [tie] & amateur flags. [These awards were earned with Billy Burton in the saddle.]

Yobo has other talents, too. The mare has been featured in a commercial & was a 'model' for a national equine supply company.

A near cropout, the blue zone [dark skin] under the apron on her face just met the standard when she was registered. Of course now with the more relaxed AQHA white rule, this wouldn't be an issue.

Yobo is pictured here with Billy Burton, her partner through many an amateur class. This was her official retiremant picture & the last time she was shown,- she won, too!

Just as an aside... In this photo, Yobo is 5 months in foal with her 2000 Mr JB Dude daughter, JB Sky Hy Bailey. A "color" horse, watch for Sky in the reining pen!

Grumblin Gertie
1984 AQHA appendix sorrel mare

Grumblin Gertie is a 16 HH, 1984 sorrel, appendix AQHA mare. Her sire is the Thoroughbred stakes placed winner, Grumblethorpe. Born in 1977, he had 31 starts with 8 wins, 6 seconds & 5 thirds for a LTE of $97,733.00 {US}. Grumblethorpe was by the black type stakes winner Prince John & out of the blue hen stakes winning & producing mare, Unity Hall [dam of Linkage, Glory Glory, Croquis, etc.].

Gertie's dam, Oona Haag [Mr Banjo Player - Gold Ban Jo X Denver Lillian - Denver's Sir Bar], was a nice all around riding mare & a one time GRA/WPRA barrel horse.

Used as a combined training mount in the past, Gertie is producing athletic foals with a talent for jumping. One of her sons by Mr JB Dude, JB Esoteric Esquire [16.3 HH sorrel gelding] is easily jumping 4'. He's currently winning over fences on the 'A' circuit & made his debut at Gulfport in 2001. At last report he was in New York. Gerts also has other sons & daughters by Mr JB Dude who are [or will be] competitive sport horses. One is the two year old, 16.1 HH gelding, JB Claremorris owned by Rosemary Shuford of Alpharetta, GA. Started under saddle & showing tons of promise, 'three day' might well be in "Mo's" future.

Grumblin Gertie is pictured here at the age of 19 years alongside her then six week old, 2003 Mr JB Dude filly, JB Diva La Dude.

Stormy Darling
1989 JC chestnut mare

Stormy Darling [33-3-2-3] is a race winning, 16 HH, 1989 chestnut TB mare by Eufaula Native [LTE - $2,378, 9-0-1-2; Native Charger X Chelantain - Chieftain] & out of W.'s Darling [Satan's Chief X Marvilla - King Hairan]. W's Darling had a LTE of $21,970 with 3 wins out of 14 starts. I've been told that W.'s broodmare sire, King Hairan, was one of the first truely great race horses to come out of the state of Florida. He was foaled in 1954 & had a LTE of $237,837. [A pretty good piece of change for that time!]

Linebred to Chieftain 3X3 [SW of $405,256 & a son of Bold Ruler], Stormy has a classic American TB pedigree that just yells, "Speed!"

The winner of 3 races on the track [going 6 & 4.5 furlong] with a LTE of $8,248.00, Stormy has produced both TB & QH foals. One of them is Jazzy Dash, a very promising 2001 Pure D Dash daughter. This MBNA nominated filly is presently in race training with Janet Van Bebber.

2002 was Stormy's first year in the Cloughrinka broodmare band & she now has a 2003 chestnut filly by Mr JB Dude. The youngest foal in the pasture, Little Storm ["JB Native Storm", pending] was quick to show her dominance among the other babies. Another running prospect? Stormy Darling is 13 years old in this photo.

The Irish Empress
1988 AQHA sorrel mare

The Irish Empress is a 15.2 HH, 1988 sorrel AQHA mare. She is an unshown daughter of the AQHA Superior Halter horse, Scarlet Irishman. Irishman earned 63 AQHA halter points [38 Grand Championships & 20 Reserve Championships] along with 8 western pleasure & 1 hunter under saddle point. An injury ended his campaign for an AQHA Championship. He is also the sire of AQHA halter/performance point earners & performance ROM.

Scarlet Irishman was by AQHA Champion Scarlet Imp SI-88 by the Thoroughbred stallion, The Pimpernel, world record holder for 4.5 furlong. [Please note that Scarlet Imp is not Impressive bred. Actually, he was born before Impressive.] Scarlet Imp was out of My Brandy [Firebrand Reed AA X My Mistake - Question Mark AAA]. Scarlet Irishman's dam was the arena ROM mare, Irishbar Brandy [Irishbar Bob, AQHA Champion X My Brandy - Firebrand Reed].

[Firebrand Reed, AA, is known for having been a noted sire, in his own right, as well as being a full brother to Leo.]

The Irish Empress' dam, Scarlet Empress, was a futurity winning Scarlet Imp daughter & out of the race mare, Osie Josie SI-85, by Joak [Joe Reed II X Navie Girl - Cowboy P12]. Joak, AAA, was an accomplished race horse & sire. His get included AQHA Champions & AAA runners. He was also a well known maternal sire & maternal grandsire.

Again, we have close breeding to Scarlet Imp as well as more strong ties to the Joe Reed & the Plaudit lines.

Irish, when bred to Mr JB Dude, is producing foals that can both halter as well as ride. Her daughter, JB Irish Alanah Reed, is currently being campaigned on the  PHBA show circuit. She's an open & amateur point earner in halter & performance with class wins and a circuit high point. Another promising JB/Irish foal is the gelding, JB Goose O Bailey.

Irish is pictured here at 14 years of age. [2002]

Jacks Long Star
1996 chestnut mare

There's an exception to every rule and Jacks Long Star is mine. She's unshown as were both her parents. She's a maiden so her produce capabilites are unknown. Normally, she wouldn't be my logical choice. There's just something about her that I like, though, so this 14 HH chestnut mare has entered our broodmare band.

Go back a bit & her pedigree is strong. On the top side, her grandsire, Way Out West earned 7 halter & 24 perfomance AQHA points [reining - 5, western pleasure - 15, western riding - 2, cutting - 1] as well as PHBA points. He also earned NCHA money & a Certificate of Ability. His sire, Double L Straw, ran AAA on the track & was also an  AQHA Champion. Way Out West's dam, Cee Holly Joanie earned 11 halter & 99 performance AQHA points along with a Honor Roll Cutting Championship.

There's also the Two Eyed Jack/Ann's Dish Rag cross. Ann's Dish Rag was a super solid perfomance horse & was line bred 2X3 Little Joe. Perhaps his best producing daughter was Miss Rags Royal. When bred to AQHA champion, Two Eyed Jack, she produced the AQHA Champion/World Champion, Deacon Jack. We see this strong niche again here. In this pedigree, Miss Rags Royal was bred to Jacks Gemini, a son of Two Eyed Jack & out of the Guatemala daughter, Mick Lee. The result was Miss Jackie Gemini, the dam of Wayout Mr Jack.

On Star's distaff pedigree, we go back to such old greats as Sugar Bars, Poco Bueno & Double Bid.  Although there's not much activity in her  parents generation, the indication of performance ability is there. Add to that beautiful movement along with a good head & conformation. Who knows? She just might make a super nice broodmare. At least, that's what we're hoping!
