There must be some sweet pastured place
Where creeks sing on and tall trees grow
Some Paradise where horses go.
For by the love that guides my pen
I know great horses live again."

Mr JB DUDE -AQHA/PHBA/FQHA 1985 - 2004 palomino stallion
On January 24th, 2004, we lost Mr JB Dude to colic. Quite simply, he was my once in a lifetime horse. JB was special. He will always be well loved & well remembered.
His loss was devastating. I seriously considered the option of walking away from horses completely when I lost JB. The problem is, it's what I've done all my life & lifestyles are hard to break. Plus, he's left behind many fine foals to carry on so I suppose I should, also. We've two JB colts that I hope will earn the right to be stallions. One is out of our great show mare, Golden Yobo. The other is full brother to Dudes Super Pride, a beautiful mare whose show career was permanently sidelined by a pasture injury. They both show talent & that bit of "spark". I guess we'll just have to see...
Thank you to all the wonderful people who expressed their condolences & offered support. Friends are special, too. Also, thank you to Dr. Graham, DVM of Cairo, GA. We tried.
Except for this entry & the poem above, I have left JB's page intact.
Love ya, J-bird!

Performance
Mr JB Dude is a 1985 palomino stallion and is registered with the American Quarter Horse Association, the Palomino Horse Breeders of America & the Foundation Quarter Horse Association. A PHBA Performance Champion [#123], JB has 500+ PHBA points in 11 open events [barrel racing, pole bending, flag race, western parade, western riding, reining, ranch horse, hunter under saddle, road hack, APA race & halter] as well as amateur halter. He has earned four open Register Of Merits [barrel race, pole bending, flag race & western parade] as well as 11 open Honor Roll titles [in flag race, barrel race, western parade & APA race] from 1994 to 2001. JB has also garnered numerous state/ regional year end awards [Blue Grass Palomino Horse Assoc, Northwest Florida Palomino Assoc, Alabama Palomino Exhibitors' Assoc.] & circuit high points. This was all accomplished while only hauling an average of a half dozen weekends per year.
Mr JB Dude has also worked for a living outside the show pen. When he was first started under saddle, JB put in many a day penning calves at the stock yard. He's been used to sort & move cattle and has even been known to venture into the hollows & swamps during a wild cow hunt or two. JB has also been featured as a model in a national equine supply catalog.
2001 - Mr JB Dude was the Reserve Circuit Champion timed event horse at the NFPA Memorial Day Circuit [4 day 'A' shows], Jackson County Center, Marianna, FL. At the following NFPA Labor Day circuit, he was nosed out of the standings by his daughter, JB Lacealea. Well, at least they kept it in the family...

Pedigree
Mr JB Dude is foundation bred. [FQHA - 87.5%] His pedigree is a blend of old racing lines on performance/all around blood. To view Mr JB Dude's pedigree chart as well as photos of a few ancestors, please use this link.
Sire line: Mr JB Dude's sire, Mr Joe Pac, SI-86 race ROM, was a multiple race winner. From what I understand, Mr Joe Pac's race career was prematurely ended due to injury. Later, owned by an estate, he was bred to a very limited number of mares. Despite this, in addition to siring PHBA Performance Champion Mr JB Dude, Mr Joe Pac sired producing daughters. He is the broodmare sire of AQHA Superior Halter horse, Do It Like This [Zip Like This - Zip To Impress X Halipacs - Mr Joe Pac].
Mr Joe Pac was a product of solid Rutland Ranch breeding. He was by the great race horse & sire Pacific Bailey, SW, SI-100, AQHA Champion, race ROM & earner of 24 halter points [Gold Pacific, SI-95 - Gold King Bailey, SI-85 X Nell Bert Mc Cue - Wyatt Mc Cue]. Mr Joe Pac was out of the stakes winning mare, Rosa Josie, SI-88, race ROM. Rosa Josie was by King Leo Bailey, SI-95 [by Gold King Bailey, SI-85] and out of Lady Marble. By The Thoroughbred stallion, Carrara Marble [SW with LTE of $64,098; an AQHA leading maternal grandsire], Lady Marble was out of the the brilliant race mare, Josie's Bar [Three Bars (TB) X Josephine R - Raffles (TB)]. Josie's Bar was a legend onto herself. Running AAAT time, she was named the 1954 Champion Quarter Running Mare, the 1954 Champion Quarter Running 3 year old Mare &, beating out the boys, the 1954 World Champion Quarter Running Horse.
Interestingly, not only was Gold Pacific & King Leo Bailey both by Gold King Bailey but they were also out of full sisters. Their respective dams, South Pacific & Rosa Leo, were both by the great Leo [by Joe Reed II] & out of Randles Lady [Doc Horn (TB) X a granddaughter of Old DJ]. Randles Lady was race ROM & was also the dam of the leading sire, Croton Oil - AA, race ROM by Leo [making him a full brother to South Pacific & Rosa Leo], race ROM earner Little Doc Horn [also by Leo] as well as the AQHA Champion, Sugaree Bars [by Sugar Bars].
Rutland Ranch's Pacific Bailey is an All Time Leading sire of race ROM qualifiers. His son, Mr Joe Pac is line bred Gold King Bailey 3X3 with multiple crosses to King, the Leo/Joe Reed line & Old Joe Bailey.

2000 - Mr JB Dude earned PHBA Circuit Championships in both open flags & poles at the Southern States Triple Crown Horse Show, Georgia National Fairgounds, Perry, GA.
Distaff line: Now, let's look at the distaff side of the pedigree. JB's 1st dam, Ms Blondy Dude, earned 3 A-rated PHBA open halter points the only time she was ever shown. Reportedly, this golden palomino mare was mainly used as a Shriners' parade horse. She is by the AQHA ROM sire and ROM maternal grandsire, Sir Dude. Sir Dude was by Blondy's Dude, AQHA Champion & AQHA Hall of Fame inductee, and out of the PHBA Champion & AQHA reining points earner, Siretta. Siretta was by AQHA Champion Sir Teddy & out of Skipperetta [Spanish Nick - Nick Shoemaker X Skipperette - Skipper W]. Sir Dude was shown at halter as a weanling & yearling. According to AQHA records, he had 18 wins out of 22 classses with one reserve Championship. The largest class he won was in Fort Worth, TX where he defeated 26 other entries. Unfortunately, at this time, AQHA did not award points to any horse under 2 years of age. An AQHA ROM sire, Sir Dude is also the broodmare sire of 28 AQHA performers. They have earned 8 performance ROMs, 3 halter ROMs, 8 Show All Arounds & are AQHA World Qualifiers. He is also the broodmare sire of PHBA point earners, a PHBA Performance Champion and NSBA & NBHA money earners. [How's that for versatility?]
The 2nd dam, Miss Chipogold [by Lyon's Chipper], is the dam of 13 foals, including AQHA & PHBA performers as well as point producing daughters. Lyon's Chipper is also the sire of the APHA performance point siring stallion, Shawnee Chipper. 3rd dam, Buckskin Bars [by Bob Little,- 1/2 brother to Della Bob, the dam of Bar Bob], produced three performers. They include Sue Mano - 5 AQHA halter points & 1 Grand Championship [Sue Mano is also the dam of Little Cocoa Twist, SI-93] as well as race & money winner, Kauai Twist & performance class winner, Easy Movin Bar. Mr JB Dude's 4th dam, Miller's Ghost [by Grey Badger II], earned 2 AQHA open barrel points in 2 shows.
Ms Blondy Dude is linebred with multiple crosses to Zantanon, Skipper W, Nick Shoemaker & Plaudit. Mr JB Dude's pedigree is a conglomeration of all these talented individuals. It also lends itself to an interesting study in extended line breeding. Just for an example, he sports [among others] 17 crossses to Peter Mc Cue, 10 crosses to Traveler, 9 crosses to Old DJ & 6 crosses to Old Joe Bailey in 9 generations .

Conformation & Disposition
Mr JB Dude is an intelligent, kind, honest horse. I had to smile one day when a woman was inquiring about a client's horse that might be available for sale. She asked about the size, general conformation, color & then inquired about the filly's attitude. Before I could reply she said, "Oh that's a JB baby,- I know she'll be sweet!" While it's impossible to uniformly guarantee that all his foals will be kind [there's that nature versus nurture element!] I can honestly say that all the JB foals I've dealt with have been good minded. JB is a nice horse to be around & so are his foals.
When considering Mr JB Dude's conformation, the words that come to mind are "moderation" & "balance". Standing 15 HH, everyone always thinks he's taller than he is. I believe that's the result of balance. JB has neither a slight nor heavy frame. It's also my opinion that this moderation lends itself to his athletic ability & soundness. [At the age of 16, he was on the PHBA Honor Roll, placing 6th in the nation in open flag race.] JB has short cannon bones & his hocks are set close to the ground. He sports great angles with a long, sloping shoulder. JB has a beautiful head with a powerful jaw & large, kind eyes that reflect his personality.
In the past, it wasn't unheard of for JB to breed a mare on Friday & then show on Saturday. He has the intelligence & personality to know when it's time to work & when it's time to work. Granted, training instills manners. At the same time, though, without the right kind of mind all the training in the world is useless. In short, JB is an honest horse. [In case you haven't noticed, he's also well loved. :-)]

Get of Sire
When crossed with somewhat coarse mares, JB seems to "clean them up". Fortunately for us, his foals have shown the same athletic ability & "workable" attitude that he claims. Please note that JB's foals, at birth, tend to be small bodied sporting legs that go on forever. They hit the ground & start growing! I mention this because some breeders find this trait to be particularly beneficial, especially in respect to maiden mares. [Smaller birth foals usually equate to less dystocias.]
Through the years I've noticed that most of JB's foals, at maturity, are taller than he is & they're usually taller than their dams, too. An excellent example is the cross between JB & our appendix mare, Grumblin Gertie. Gertie stands 16 HH & has a slender build. The mating of these two horses has consistently produced foals that are 16+ HH with substance. I've seen this time & again with other mares, too. Mr JB Dude out sires himself.
Mr JB Dude has been bred to a wide variety of mares. This past season alone, the roster ran from foundation mares to Thoroughbreds along with appendix race breds, Paints and even Impressive & Conclue granddaughters. Why such diversity in mares? Ask their owners. I believe it's because the JB foals all tend to share the same athletic qualities, good minds, attractive looks & soundness.
Mr JB Dude's foals are much like their sire in that they show his balance. For the most part, they're very athletic & have solid, moderate builds,- not 'weedy' but, then again, not so heavy that they lose grace. Off hand, I can think of a few mares we bred to JB who had rather straight shoulders & pasterns. Their JB foals, though, all had good, sloping angles. The JB babies tend to have low hocks, short cannons, long underlines & good necks. They're usually attractive, too, with typey heads. I know... they say you don't ride the head. All the same, pretty never hurt!
For those wondering about color, palomino is the result of the creme dilute gene on a red base. Being an incomplete dominant, a palomino will contribute the creme gene 50% of the time. The result, when bred to a non dilute, will be a palomino, a buckskin or a smoky black, depending on the color of the non dilute. [EX - palomino X sorrel = 50% palomino, 50% sorrel.] Granted, some years it seems like every foal is palomino or buckskin but, in actuality, it's a coin toss.

Two mares by Mr JB Dude, JB Lacealea & JB Irish Alanah Reed.
Mr JB Dude's foals are open, amateur & youth point earners in halter and performance. They've shown a wide variety of talents, winning in everything from halter to lunge line, from hunt seat to roping & from timed events to over fences. They're class winners, futurity champions/reserve champions, circuit high points, year end awards winners, money earners [NSBA, AHSA, NBHA, etc.] and just nice horses to be around!
Some of his performers include: JB We Be Jammin [PHBA World Championship Show - Top Ten], JB Esoteric Esquire [winning over fences on the AHSA 'A' circuit], JB Lacealea [PHBA open, amateur & youth points in halter and performance, PHBA honor roll timed event horse] & JB Irish Alanah Reed [PHBA open & amateur points in halter and performance, circuit high point All Around], to name a few.
Admittedly, not all of his foals end up in the show pen,- I know of at least one that's used in Civil War cavalry re-enactments!
Whether turning NBHA barrels, earning a living at PRCA roping events, winning over AHSA [or is it Eq-USA, now?] fences, showing PHBA All Around or leading a Civil War charge,- JB's foals are athletic, honest performance horses that share in his "give 100%" attitude!

"Cha cḥir an t-each glan a chur uige."
The willing horse should not be spurred.
